about

THE HEAT

Jacobo de Miguel: fender Rhodes & melodica
Michael Lee Wolfe: guitar
Joshua Kuhl: bass
Ethan Winogrand: drums

The Heat is a new sound for Winogrand. With the addition of the Fender Rhodes electric piano and combined with electric guitar, the only acoustic instruments are the acoustic bass and the drums. Winogrand was inspired by the sound of the Rhodes when he performed his piano trio in Gijon, Spain and there was no acoustic piano provided. Jacobo de Miguel wanted to bring his Fender Rhodes instead of a synthetic keyboard and Winogrand agreed. From the first moment he heard Jacobo´s electric piano it brought to mind the sound of the late 1960s when Herbie Hancock and Chick Chorea introduced the Rhodes to the jazz world with Miles Davis on his groundbreaking record Bitches Brew. Winogrand is clear that his music is in no way comparable to the 1969 Bitches Brew, but the sound of the Rhodes gives him and hopefully the listener of this recording, a taste of that nostalgic era. The organic sound of the acoustic bass contrasting with the two electric chordal instruments is an important component of this recording for the composer. This new music was inspired and created with the Fender Rhodes and Jacobo de Miguel in mind and with a freedom to follow a more groove based genre of improvisation.
